FAQ
Freqeuntly Asked Questions and Common Concerns
I'm so uncomfortable with the thought of being seen by the attendant during my immersion.
We hear this a lot. The following information may put you at ease:
● Your attendant is not here to see you, she’s there to support you as you do this mitzvah.
● While you enter the mikvah, the attendant will avert her eyes. Please feel free to face whichever direction is most comfortable for you.
● While you are in the mikvah, your attendant will hold up a robe or towel to maintain your privacy. To fulfill her role, the only thing the mikvah attendant needs to see is the top of the water, as her job is to make sure all of your hair is submerged during your tevilah.
What if I know my attendant? I wouldn’t feel comfortable being taken to the mikvah by a close friend or family member.
If there’s ever an attendant that you’re uncomfortable with, you can reach out to another attendant and ask them to take you instead. If that does happen, please note that you be the last appointment of the evening. To find an attendant that works for you please reach out to Ora Davies at 856-671-2766. All of our attendants are happy to help.
Will I bump into other women in the parking lot, entrance, or hallways?
While we are as discreet as possible, and most of the time you won’t meet anyone coming in or out of the mikvah, as our community grows we expect this trend to shift. While we can’t guarantee you’ll never meet another woman, please keep in mind that using the mikvah is a normal part of life as a Jewish woman. While it is something we keep as private as possible, it’s certainly not shameful. If you do meet another woman, please try to remind yourself that she is just like you — you share this special night with her and are both doing one of the holiest things a Jewish woman can do.
If you are extremely uncomfortable with the thought of possibly meeting another woman at the mikvah: Just let your attendant know. She will work with you and help to maintain your privacy.
What can I do if I have fears or anxieties that are related to the mikvah experience?
We’re here to support you in any way possible. If you do have any anxieties, phobias, or symptoms of stress when preparing for or using the mikvah, please let us know. In some cases, we can make special adjustments for you. In all cases, we’d like to know so we can be as supportive and understanding as possible.
What should I do if I have a disability or impairment that affects my mikvah expereince?
You are welcome to inform your attendant about any special circumstances or needs at the time you book your appointment. While you’re obviously not required to disclose any personal information, if we can better support you by anticipating any challenges, we are more than happy to do so!
